"Nature - History Mix" - Houston Audubon Society Field Trip to Baytown, Texas
[October 19, 2011]

Mr. Chambers' enrichment class [6,7,8 grades] traveled to Baytown [Texas] under the sponsorship of the Houston Audubon Society to make photographs of nature displays at the Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Education Center, Wetlands area, Cedar Bayou, Alexander Chapel [Cedar Bayou Grace United Methodist], Cedar Bayou Methodist Cemetery and San Jacinto Monument/Wetlands area.

The Cedar Bayou Methodist Cemetery is the oldest of the five Cedar Bayou cemeteries. It dates back to 1844, the founding date of the Church ... Alexander Chapel ... located on Ferry Road. The cemetery's oldest existing marker is that of Sarah E. Scudder, 1850. John Riley Rhea [served in the Texas Revolution, and was a member of the Texas Rangers] and several Civil War veterans are buried there. Sam Houston [first and third President of the Republic of Texas, U.S. Senator for Texas after it joined the United States, and finally as Governor of the state] worshipped at the original chapel. The current chapel was rebuilt in 1884 [more history].
